Bangladeshi Cuisine: Burnley's Best-Kept Takeaway Secret

Tara Takeaway · 13 Rosegrove Lane, Burnley · Updated July 2026

Here's something most people don't know: the vast majority of "Indian" takeaways and curry houses in Britain were founded by Bangladeshi families - most of them from one region, Sylhet. Tara Takeaway in Burnley is proudly part of that story, and it's why some of the most interesting dishes on our menu aren't ones you'll find in a standard curry cookbook.

What Makes Bangladeshi Cooking Different?

Bangladesh sits on the Bay of Bengal, a land of rivers, rice paddies and lush greenery. Its cooking leans on fresh herbs, mustard oil, slow-cooked meats and a very particular chilli - the famous naga. Where north Indian food is often rich with cream and butter, Sylheti home cooking is deeper, earthier and more layered. Spices are toasted and ground fresh, and dishes are cooked down until the sauce clings to the meat.

The Bangladeshi Dishes to Try at Tara

Bangla Kala Bhuna - from £8.00

A semi-dry meat delicacy from the Bay of Bengal, slow-cooked with mustard oil, garlic, ginger and herbs until the meat is dark, glossy and intensely savoury. In Chittagong and Sylhet this is celebration food - and it's one of our chef's proudest dishes.

Sylheti Murghi Massala - £8.50

Murghi simply means chicken. Grilled tikka strips are folded through a thick, spiced keema sauce - a genuine home-style dish, the kind our family grew up eating. It carries a proper Sylheti heat; check our spice guide if you're unsure.

Naga Mirch - from £8.00

The naga chilli is Bangladesh's most famous export for heat lovers. It's very hot, yes - but what makes it special is the fragrance: fruity, floral and smoky. A Naga Mirch curry tastes like nothing else on the menu.

Bangla Tandori Roust - £10.00

Rich Bangladeshi-style tandoori chicken on the bone, cooked in ghee with onions, peppers and tomatoes. On the bone matters - it's how the dish is served back home, and the flavour is deeper for it.

Desi Biriyani - £15.00

Chicken or lamb cooked desi style - the way it's done at home, not the restaurant shortcut - with whole spices and herbs, served with Balti sauce. More on the craft in what makes a great biryani.

Why It Matters for Your Takeaway

Anyone can follow a recipe. But dishes like Kala Bhuna and Naga Mirch come from lived tradition - techniques passed down through families and brought to Lancashire decades ago. When you order Bangladeshi dishes from a Bangladeshi kitchen, you're tasting the real thing. That's what has kept Burnley coming back to Tara for over 20 years.

Next time you order your usual, add one Bangladeshi dish to the bag. That's how favourites are found.
